:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael McAssey -- Incredible, raw, honest and unapologetic! : Taking the journey with Billy Porter thru it all, and I mean ALL! Stirring, hopeful, heartbreaking and heartwarming. Thank you! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from pam patterson -- Rock Star Writing : Absolutely stellar page turner. Musician, actor, dancer, author?! Oh my. This talent pours his soul out it in a way that brings new and fascinating understanding to what it is be a black gay man in America. He speaks to the unending store of resilience it takes to get past the “believers”, haters, gate keepers and maybe even the very core of American society. Bring it Billy. With more voices like these, I have hope we shall overcome. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Trish -- Proof that hard work (and a LOT of talent!) pays off! : After reading the Kindle sample, I had to buy this book! I had seen interviews with Billy Porter where he spoke of how his mother impressed the importance of education upon him, and how his education ranged from not only college, but training in business, voice, and screenwriting as well as performance. Reading his memoir, he also received an education in hard knocks and no self-pity, as he has taken his life experience and channeled it into this book which he called his "trauma therapy" in late night interviews so that all of us who have gone through bullying, assault, and the like could overcome what he has and learn how to be better people and stand up for ourselves and others. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from mark p -- it is all true. : billie porter is a man hewn out of american pride - a proud black man struggling to serve on a white man's stage; who all too often change the rules for their own benefit. that billie survives and flourishes is a proof that talent knows no skin color. if some people can't understand exemplary reviews merely shows that THEY have not read the book. how can anyone Not read it? this book is True truth, not fake news or false truth. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from JT -- Paving an uncharted path: An emotional, riveting roller coaster testimony : I just finished this riveting, gut-wrenching memoir that shines the light on the devastation, fear, abuse, and lack of protection of a gifted artist longing to be seen, heard and respected as an artist and a human. This is a testimony to fighting for your voice and being ready! This is a tour de force book with a singularly specific voice beseeching each reader to go on a roller coaster and live in an artist shoes as they find the spotlight they so deserve! - 1.0 out of 5 stars from D. J. Fuerman -- Boring : I did not like this book, I threw it in the trash. It’s full of “poor me” and blames society for his failures. There is unnecessary explicit sexual content. Not worth a dime. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kai Rasmussen -- Moving and triumphant : My most anticipated book of the fall did not disappoint! I love Billy’s bravery and openness, and the truth of it all. I want more books from him! More brilliant words and songs and distilling of chaos down to the things that really matter. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shopaholic -- Compelling and informative. : I’m a big fan of Billy & was looking forward to reading his book. I found it very informative of both his life and the entire process of getting to Broadway. It’s definitely written in his inimitable style and you can imagine his voice reading it to you. Very brave of him to delve into his personal trauma and enlighten those of us who have never experienced abuse or racism. Made me admire him even more! - 2.0 out of 5 stars from nora doyle -- not worth a read : I read a review on this book before I opened page one, where a reader stated that Porter’s ‘woe is me attitude it quite exhausting’ my first thought was ‘Billy has been through so much and worked so hard, you just don’t get it’ ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2022 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Louise Stokes -- Fantastic! : I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although I only really became aware of Billy Porter through his role as Pray Tell in the BBC2 series "Pose", this was a fascinating read. His life story is one of determination, triumph over adversity and never giving up. It could have descended into "woe is me" or a saccharine story of "the boy done good" but it stays on the right side of drama and his "voice" really comes through. Billy's humour and writing style is really easy to read and I would recommend this book to everyone! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2022 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Abi Dixon -- Inspirational, uplifting, heart wrenching... : An incredible book by an inspirational man who has overcome so much and given back to this world far more than he could ever take. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 5, 2022 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from AJ Silver -- Immaculately written : Written in such an accessible and moving way. As I read it, I could hear Billy speaking. I laughed, I cried! I cried again when it was all gone! You won’t be disappointed ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 3, 2022 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from giacomo -- Just translate in Italian please! : Italy need to read this story! (Maybe someone in our parliament) ( Reviewed in Italy on October 28, 2021 )
