I'm glad to report you can thoroughly enjoy this without ever having touched that one. The characters are clearly laid out, there are some references to previous events that get adequately explained, and I never felt like I was showing up halfway into a movie. The first one left me with such an impact from the interesting characters that I absolutely couldn't stand not knowing more about them. And boy does this ever fill my need for character development. I discovered the book back when it was still freely available on the internet; before it exploded and became a cult horror sensation / movie / etc. That said, John Dies was never a perfect book, or even a very good one. Fans love the book for its deeply character-rooted humor, bizarre Lovecraftian monster-horror, and compulsive, borderline-addictive readability. There's a wonderful vacuous inanity to this series that is just fun to experience. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- zombies and gore while "John dies at the end" has more of a surreal, twisted and genuinely creepy feel to it. : I saw the film "John dies at the end" a few years ago and thought it was a good, solid comedy/horror movie. I had no idea it was based on a book until my sister got me it for my birthday. I put off reading it for a few months because I'd already seen the film, but it ended up being one of the most enjoyable reading experiences I've ever had. I decided to re-watch the film because I loved the book so much and then found myself hating the film. All the back story you need to know is explained. And it really isn't a continuation of the 1st book, as Korrach, the villain of the 1st book doesn't make an appearance, and has no role. This book is full of spiders is a good follow up but not great, if the first was a mad sprint through the world of sci-fi/comedy/horror then David Wong has hit his stride and is now running a marathon. All the favourites are back, Amy, John and David are on form (not forgetting Molly of course), we have a new character Detective Falconer who could be a decent recurring character in further books, and the usual madness and mayhem you'd expect but it just seems a bit restrained after the full on insanity of John Dies. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Drifter -- An ok sequel, not great : The sequel is ok. It's funny, especially the first half, but it takes some time to get you hooked into it. When I but this type of easy novels I expect to be addicted to them and finish them rather quickly, but it wasn't the case with this one. I think it's because Amy's and John's stories were clearly less exciting than David's, so it was always a turn down when the point of view changed to those characters.
